How does the voice work?
In a nutshell:- Air, passing over the vocal folds in the larynx (voice box / Adam's apple), causes vibrations which are shaped and enhanced by resonation as they pass through the pharynx, mouth, nose & other skull (and some theoriticians maintain) body cavities, cartilage & bones. The details of how the resulting vocal qualities are determined, and how that "determination" can be trained into the individual speaker or singer, fill many, many volumes of highly contradictory "Scientific", "Psuedo-Scientific" and totally "Non-Scientific" literature. I include a bibliography of some such material for your interest. I would suggest that if you wish to start on the adventure of discovering the theory/theories of vocal production, you should make sure to read at least ten of the books before you start to sprout any new found knowledge. After such an excercise you may feel it wisest not to be bothered espousing any of the theories, but to simply practice the method/s that seem to work for you. One thing is certain; the voice takes time to train to a point of safe maturity. As with any other pursuit, there is no "Instant Success". |
